President Lincoln was often discusted with General McClellan's refusal to engate the enemy. In fact, McClellan seemed to make no progress in the field at all, threatening by inaction to prolong the war indefinitely. The President wrote the following letter:

If you are not using the army, I should like to borrow it for a short while.
